Brabant circa 1490/1495

A Brabantine carved wooden pietà group, circa 1490/1495

Presumably oak, carved three-quarters in the round and partially freestanding, the reverse flattened and deeply hollowed out in the centre. With partially overpainted older polychromy. A finely carved devotional work designed for a frontal and lowered viewpoint. The work depicts the mourning Virgin cradling the body of Her dead Son in Her lap. The calm and balanced composition is enlivened by its highly three-dimensional rendering and the particularly detailed depiction of the Virgin's richly draped robes.
Christ's left forearm possibly replaced. A vertical crack nailed over with a panel to the reverse. Wear with minor losses. Mounted on a Neogothic plinth. 76 x 45 x 25 cm (without plinth).
