A Mechelen carved wooden figure of Saint Margaret, circa 1520
Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened. Extensive remains of presumably original polychromy.. A standing depiction of the saint designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint, dressed in a fashionable bodice, long gown, and voluminous cloak. She is shown resting her foot upon her attribute, the dragon, whose head and the rump are lost due to insect damage in the lower half of the piece. The work bears the city mark of Mechelen to the reverse.
The hands lost, minimal wear. Losses due to insect damage. Height 45 cm.
Purchased in 1998 from Henk van de Ven art dealers, ´s-Hertogenbosch. - Private collection, Northwest Germany.
