Antwerp circa 1510/1520

An Antwerp carved wooden figure of a soldier from a flagellation scene, circa 1510/1520

Carved three-quarters in the round and partially freestanding, the reverse flattened. Minimal remains of former polychromy. This finely carved piece depicts a soldier facing to the right, kneeling to bind a bunch of twigs together to form a flail. The figure would have originally formed part of a scene of the flagellation of Christ from a passion altarpiece. The work bears the hand-shaped city mark of Antwerp to the top of the head.
Wear with minor losses to the hat brim and plinth. The knife handle reattached. 25.5 x 20 x 8 cm.
