A carved oak figure of Saint Christopher, presumably Upper Rhine-Region, circa 1530/1540

Carved three-quarters in the round and partially freestanding. Extensively overpainted older polychromy. The integral plinth inscribed "San. Christopho(rus)". The work depicts the saint wading through the river, steadying himself on a tree trunk and carrying the blessing infant Christ upon his shoulders. Designed for a frontal viewpoint, the piece is characterised by Saint Christopher's dynamic stance.
Minimal wear. The lateral edges of the plinth replaced. Height 62 cm.
