The Monk of Calais

Oil on canvas. 57 x 49 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: C. Moench 1831..

This painting depicts a scene from Laurence Stern's famous book “A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy”, which was first published in London in 1768. Whilst travelling with Madame de L., the Reverend Yorick met a monk in Calais begging for alms for his abbey. Yorick first refused to give him anything, but later regretted his decision. In this work, we see him exchanging his valuable tortoiseshell snuffbox for the simple horn snuffbox of the monk Pater Lorenzo. Yorick was to keep this trinket with him throughout his travels, and even had it with him when he wept tears of mourning over Pater Lorenzo's grave.
