This work depicts the silhouette of Santa Maria della Salute at the entrance of the Grand Canal, with its two domes and two bell towers bathed in the light of the evening sun reflecting upon the lagoon. On the right edge, we see the Doge's Palace as Serenissima's worldly centre, whilst the sailing boats and figures on the right side illustrate the bustling city life. Ludwig Mecklenburg was born in Hamburg but moved to Munich in 1843. He took numerous sojourns to Italy, where he was inspired to paint his popular Italian vedutas.
