Signed lower left: Fabius Brest a ma nièce Marie Brest.

Fabius Brest travelled to Constantinople in 1857 and remained there for several years. The artist from Marseille drew many of his motifs from the city on the Bosporus, turning them into paintings which he exhibited successfully at the Paris Salon. Brest dedicated this charming oil sketch to his niece Marie.
