Hugo Kauffmann

The Good Match

Oil on panel. 37.5 x 46 cm.
Signed and dated lower left: Hugo Kauffmann 89.

Hugo Kauffmann was born in Hamburg and studied in Frankfurt under Jacob Becker and Eduard von Steinle. He settled in Munich in 1871 following stays in Kronberg, Düsseldorf, and Paris. Kauffmann became one of the most important proponents of the local painting school, and especially of genre painting. His naturalistic and often comical scenes are frequently set in taverns and rustic interiors in the Dutch genre tradition, which Kauffmann studied intensively. Since he tended to favour smaller formats, this depiction is one of the largest works he ever painted.

Provenance

English private ownership.
