The fact that the photographs of the British photographer John Bulmer, who documented the bleak and gloomy industrial areas of the north of England in the 1960s and 1970s, were only discovered by the art world in recent years is due to the fact that the photographer did not envisage his photographs on the walls of a gallery, but rather in the context of a magazine. His shots have appeared in magazines such as Life, Town and the Sunday Times Magazine. In contrast to other photojournalists of the time, he decided early on to capture his motifs in colour and not just in the black and white typical for reporting of that era. Despite naming his more famous colleagues Cartier-Bresson and Eugene Smith with their sense for the "decisive moment" as his great role models, it is the subtle colourfulness to which his pictures owe their very special appeal.
