"During my free work, the works of early Greek, Egyptian, Romanesque and Early Gothic sculpture were ever-present; styles that gave me an indication of the problem of the primeval form that I had always been preoccupied with. From then on, I saw possibilities to shape my sculptural ideas in a free and independent manner. [...] As the development towards simplification progressed, works of a cubic, almost architectural basic mood were created, which, however, still reveal the natural appearance of things. The latter was and is a main concern of my sculptural work." (Anton Hiller, Notes on my Work, in: exhib. cat. Anton Hiller. Skulpturen und Handzeichnungen, Pfalzgalerie Kaiserslautern 1974, n. p.)
