William Nelson Copley

The sun never sets
1982

Acrylic on canvas. 97 x 130 cm. Framed. Monogrammed and dated 'cply 82'. - Traces of studio and minor traces of age.

In this painting, William N. Copley demonstrates his charming sense of humour, with which, in this case, he literally takes the equestrian world for a ride. The stable has been extravagantly decorated, in a practical and modern manner, according to the Zeitgeist of the beginning of the 1980s. Both horses stand good-humouredly on patterned floor in front of a coloured wall. Even the manure shovels are neatly stowed away. Copley subjects his otherwise typical graphic shorthand to a concrete colour pattern with architectural room structures, grid patterns and constructions, which he reduces to a minimum in the style of Sol LeWitt and Ellsworth Kelly. Not even the coats of the horses are spared; the artist colours them with an irregular dot pattern.
