Richard Long

9 Stones
1978

9 slate stones, Ardennes. From approx. 63 x 18 x 2.5 cm up to approx. 75 x 21 x 2.8 cm. Signed, dated, and titled '9 Stones Richard Long 1978' on the enclosed certificate and with installation sketch and instructions. - Minor traces of age.

“Although in many respects Richard Long's work must be considered as 'abstract', it is actually on all levels a part of reality, not least because it conveys common objects and actions. Amongst other things, in this sense, he makes art 'out of nothing'. Long once wrote: 'I am content with general and common means of expression: hiking, erecting, stones, sticks, water, circles, lines, day, nights, streets'. He uses these real things - real stones, real water, real mud, and real time, real space, real actions - unformed and unchanged, and follows their inner nature and the natural principle of the least possible effort. Zen similarly never leaves the world of facts, and urges it be directly dealt with.” (Anna Seymour, Alte Welt Neue Welt, in: Festschrift anlässlich der Verleihung des Kunstpreises Aachen, Neue Galerie, Sammlung Ludwig, Cologne 1988, p.64).
