A finely carved walnut netsuke of rakan Handaka Sonja with a dragon, by Kozan. Mid-19th century

One side displays the rakan seated by a rock under a pine tree, lifting an alms bowl from which rises a large dragon visible on the reverse, the background rendered with a wave pattern. Signed gyônen rokujûyon-sai Kozan saku in a rectangular reserve.
Height 3.6 cm

Kozan (1787-after 1863) is best known for his walnut carvings, the present netsuke carved at the age of 64. He lived possibly in Nagasaki, where artists such as Kurokawa Masahide also produced carved walnut netsuke.
