An ebony netsuke of Nitta no Yoshisada’s severed head. 19th century

The head of this brave warrior shows an arrow’s wound at the forehead, referring to his death in the battle against the Ashikaga at Fujishima; later on, his decapitated head was exhibited publicly in Kyoto.
