A monumental ivory tankard with a drunken Silenus

A large and opulent vessel in the Baroque taste. Carved throughout with depictions of ancient Greek gods, maenads, Zeus and Hera riding on an eagle against a landscape background with mountains and castles. The anthemion carved handle with a nymph caryatid. Pedestal-form lid headed by a figure of a drunken Silenus and a small faun finial. The thumbrest formed as a young bacchus with a glass of wine and grapes. A partial breakage to the base, minimal chips and cracks. H 58 cm.
Attributed to South Germany, 2nd half 19th C.
