A parcel gilt Stockholm silver-mounted ivory tankard

Triangular plinth with three dolphins forming the shaft supporting a slightly tapering ivory corpus carved with tritons and nereiads. The domed slip lid with a corresponding ivory collar and finial formed as a putto with a trident. H 44.5 cm.
Marks of Gustaf Möllenborg, 1833; the ivory possibly earlier.

The carving is influenced by Georg Petel and appears to originate from the same hand as the ivory tankard with Neptune and Amphitrite in the treasury of the Munich Residence.

Provenance

Purchased from Sotheby's London, 7th April 1977, lot 213.
