A Zaragoza silver gilt figure of Nuestra Señora del Pilar

A figure of Our Lady of the Pillar standing on an octagonal waisted plinth and cylindrical base with silver filigree decor. The Virgin is depicted in with the same iconography as the figure in Zaragoza. She holds the infant Christ, who plays with a bird in his hands, in Her left arm. The Virgin's gown is richly ornmented with silver filigree and set with garnets and pearls, five enamelled flowerheads set with facetted amethysts decorate its hem. H 32 cm, weight 503 g.
Circa 1700.

This form of this figure follows that of the Spanish miraculous image known as the Virgin of the Pillar (Nuestra Señora del Pilar or the Virgen del Pilar) housed in the Basílica del Pilar, the largest Baroque church in the country. According to legend, around the year 40 A.D., an image of the Virgin Mary standing on a column is said to have appeared to the apostle Saint James and commanded him to build a church on that site. Throughout the liturgical year, the figure is dressed in various ornate garments, and devotees leave gifts of flowers for Her on Her feast day, the 12th October.
