An early 15th century Austrian carved wooden figure of Saint Barbara

Carved in the round. With extensively overpainted older polychromy. A full-length depiction of the saint designed for a frontal viewpoint. She is depicted crowned and standing in a gently swaying pose holding her attribute, the tower, in her extended left hand. She would originally have held a martyr's palm in her right. The saint is dressed in a long gown and a cloak which falls in cascades of coiling folds at her sides.
Wear with minor losses. Mounted on a moulded wooden plinth. Height 78 cm (without plinth).
