Probably West Germany 2nd half 15th century

A carved wood pietà, probably West German, 2nd half 15th century

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse deeply hollowed out. Partially overpainted older polychromy. A figure of the Virgin seated on rocky ground with Her right hand lain upon the shoulders of Her dead Son, and Her left hand supporting His arm. The depiction of Christ, clothed only in the perizonium and crown of thorns, forms an expressive contrast to the rich drapery of the Virgin's gown.
Wear with minor losses. Mounted to a wooden plinth via the back panel. Height 53 cm (without plinth).

Provenance

Private ownership, Westphalia.
