A South German ivory figure of the Infant Christ, circa 1515

Carved in the round and partially freestanding. With older, presumably original, partial polychromy and gilding. A nude figure of the Christ Child standing on a cushion with His right hand held aloft in blessing and holding a globe in His left. The fine quality of this charming small figure is accentuated by the partial polychromy, including a painted gold necklace.
Two pieces from the left calf broken and reattached. A crack above the left ankle reattached with a small loss. A hairline crack to the underside of the right foot. A drilled hole to the centre of the cushion. Height 9.6 cm.

Provenance

Formerly the Fürstlich Hohenzollernsche Collection in Sigmaringen. - Purchased from there by the Frankfurt collector Wilhelm Kratz (1873-1945) in 1927/28. - Subsequently in family ownership.
