Ludwig Philipp Strack

Landscape near Lake Plön

Oil on canvas, mounted on hardboard. 70 x 97 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: Lud. Strack 1798.

Ludwig Philipp Strack was taught to paint by his uncle Johann Heinrich Tischbein in Kassel. In 1787 he travelled to Italy with the landscape painter Friedrich Christian Reinermann, where he too turned to landscape painting under the influence of the painter Wilhelm Tischbein, a relative of his. Following his return to Kassel in 1794, he was appointed court landscape painter. In 1798, the year this work was painted, he relocated to Eutin as court painter to the Prince of Holstein. He then moved to Oldenburg in 1803, but never left his home in northern Germany.
This atmospheric work shows peasants resting in a panoramic hilly landscape typical of Holstein. The view of a lake in the distance can be identified as Lake Plön near Eutin based on the silhouette of the church of Bosau in the centre.
