Friederike Marie Meudtner was born in Berlin on 28th May 1828 to a wealthy father. According to church records, she married the lawyer Ernst Karl Emil Lau on 22nd March 1863. Following the death of his first wife Anna Maria Luise Therese Wilhelmine Petitjean, Ernst Lau inherited a property in Werneuchen, Brandenburg. The “Gutshaus Werneuen”, which was acquired by the well-known Berlin-based tool manufacturer Robert Stock after the Lau couple passed away in 1900, was rebuilt to resemble a small palace in the French Renaissance style in 1913/14.

Formerly the collections of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, National Galerie, inv. no. A1 389 (with original labels inscribed "Zur Deckung der Kosten für eine Neuerwerbung wurde dieses Bild für den Verkauf freigegeben." to the reverse) - In a South German private collection since 1981.
