The motif of the cat, in isolation or accompanying self-portraits and double portraits, recurs frequently in Hannah Höch's work from the mid-1920s onwards: most of these are portraits of her beloved cat Ninn. Höch's pluralistic, always equivocal artistic expression is characteristic of her oeuvre - thus, around 1930, she captures this motif in a number of works featuring emphatic expressiveness, prismatically fragmented abstraction or the elegantly and supplely drawn line and delicate colour scheme of the present work.
