Fritz Koenig

Gerahmtes Paar I
1964

Bronze with golden brown patina. 25.8 x 13 x 7 cm. Monogrammed 'FK' (scratched) and stamped number. Cast 3/5 (presumably only 3 casts realised)

The form of the Votive is an autonomous development within Koenig's work language. The original meaning of the genesis and structure of the vow, according to which a Votive is offered, is shifted by the sculptor to formations with dominant gestures reminiscent of a framed couple. In its double view, the couple appears as if it were braced in a frame - in this case as a relief body plate. Just few 'strokes' indicate the fateful encounter of two people embracing each other.
As austere as a box-shaped rectangle, Koenig also creates monstrance-like, expansive baroque spaces for figures or objects that, as is the case here, undergo an astonishing metamorphosis. The anatomy of the body dissolves and they transform into extremely agile, articulated display figures.
