Fritz Koenig

Adam und Eva
1970

Hemisphere, silver. Ø 10.3 cm. Monogrammed 'FK' (hammered). One of 10 casts.

Archaic, as if taken from an ancient cave drawing, Koenig draws the original couple closely entwined on a line moving forward. Or is it a hybrid creature? A hybrid creature in the main view with many characteristic details - perhaps Adam - from which a second figure emerges - perhaps Eve? Koenig uses the principle of contraction, the blurring of individual forms, and in this he finds solutions to anatomically 'use' the extremities of one body in exchange for the other. The sculptor previously imagined such hybrid creatures with the sculpture Quadriga, with equestrian motifs and centaurs, the horse people and the tightly entwined lovers.
