Gustav Zick

The Gulf of Naples

Oil on canvas. 60 x 117 cm.
Signed and dated lower left: G. Zick 1854.

Gustav Zick came from a famous family of artists which produced numerous successful painters over a period of two centuries and five generations. The most well-known of which was probably Januarius Zick, who is considered one of the most innovative painters working in the transitional period between Rococo and early Neoclassicism. His grandson Gustav Zick was educated at the Düsseldorf Academy under Wilhelm von Schadow and mainly painted animals and landscapes. This work, painted in 1854, depicts a panoramic view of the Gulf of Naples bathed in bright sunlight with the smoking Mount Vesuvius in the distance. Last year the work was featured in a notable exhibition on the Zick family at the Mittelrhein-Museum in Koblenz and was not only illustrated in the catalogue but also on the exhibition folder.
