An 18k gold and enamel Napoléon III brooch

Two-part brooch designed as a bombé rosette and a fringed attachment. Finely chased and decorated with black and white émail champlevé, set with eight Oriental pearls (diameter ca. 5 mm), 18k rose-cut diamonds and 9 turquoises. Suspending seven oval pearls (ca. 5 x 3 mm). In the original red velvet lined box (the lid loose). Hallmarks: Paris guarantee stamp for gold 1838 - 1919 (Tardy 161), maker's mark "AH" with "Alpha" mark of Auguste Halphen, master since 1850. Total H 8 cm. Weight 25.89 g.

Provenance

Rhenish private collection. Acquired in 1989 from Kunsthandel Anna-Maria Wager, Munich. According to an English note in the case, the piece was given by the French Empress Eugénie as a wedding present to a lady in Lucca.
