An 18k gold cameo brooch

Shell cameo (45 x 37 mm) finely carved with a portrait of a young man in relief, inscribed below "F.L. Dies". In an enamelled cartouche frame with chased Rococo Revival decor. 5.5 x 5 cm. Weight 27.9 g.
Presumably England, ca. 1830.

Previously described as a portrait of Frederick William IV as a young Crown Prince. The gemcutter Dies was active in Rome and portrayed numerous contemporary rulers.

Provenance

Collection of Dr. Günther Bartels, Göttingen. Purchased in 1982 from Bethmann-Hollweg art dealers, Berlin.
