A dated North German mortar

Golden brown cast bronze with fine dark brown patina, chased and embossed. Slightly tapering form with protruding stepped base and moulded rim. Both sides with large heraldic shields with mythical beasts beneath the engraved signature "V VOS" and the date "1569". Owner's monogram "E D" to verso. Dolphin shaped handles. H 23.5, D 17.6 cm. Weight 7.6 kg.
