An important North Italian mortar

Golden brown cast bronze with silvery brown patina. Cylindrical form with slightly squat lower section, moulded base and stepped flaring rim. The upper section cast with a band of acanthus scrolls above ribbon tied foliate garlands. The lower section cast with putti and wreaths held by winged lions and unicorns. Cylindrical handles. H 27.8, D 25.6 cm. Weight 17.2 kg.
Venice, attributed to the Alberghetti workshop, mid-16th / early 17th C.
