This work by Cornelis Baellieur depicts the biblical story of Jacob in a densely populated scene. The story is found in the book of Genesis. After Jacob received his father's blessing as the first born through trickery, his elder brother Esau threatened to kill him. Jacob then fled with his uncle Laban to Haran and married his two daughters. He returned to Canaan around 14 years later with his wives, riches, and herds. This is described in the Bible as follows “Then Jacob rose up, and set his sons and his wives upon camels. And he carried away all his cattle, and all his goods which he had gotten […] for to go to Isaac his father in the land of Canaan.” (Gen. 31:17-18)
