The present large-format drawing can be dated to around 1600 and originates from the important drawing collection of Antoine-Joseph d´Argenville. This large and well documented assortment of works was dispersed in 1779 at the request of d'Argentville's widow (J. Labbé und L. Bicart-Sée: La Collection de Dessins du Antoine-Joseph d´Argenville, Paris 1996).
Antonio Tempesta painted the frescoes of the Stanza della Caccia in the Villa Lante in Latium between 1588 and 1590. One of these frescoes also depicted a wild boar hunt, although the present drawing is neither directly related to these frescoes or to any of the artist's numerous copperplate engravings (E. Leuschner: Antonio Tempesta. Ein Bahnbrecher des römischen Barocks und seine europäische Wirkung, 2005).
