Giuseppe Bernardino Bison was born in the mid-18th century and died in the mid-19th century, and he was active during the transitional period between the two centuries. He was a talented and versatile artist who worked as a painter and draughtsman as well as painting scenery for the opera houses of Venice, Treviso, Görtz, and Triest. This artistic milieu also characterises the present unsigned work: A spontaneous sketch of a motif from life, possibly a young actress studying for her role. The work is drawn in a style that can be placed somewhere between Domenico Tiepolo and Venetian veduta painting.
