Venus and Cupid

Marble, carved in the round and partially freestanding. The nude Venus lies recumbent on a bed with her upper body leant back towards the small figure of Cupid who accompanies her. The sculptor Massimiliano Soldani (1658-1740) has been considered as the author of this work. The associated but corresponding socle with bronze mountings is presumably a Roman work from the time around 1800.
The feet of the Venus and the lappet of drapery below them reattached, the tip of the drapery and the toes of the right foot partially lost. Damage to the appliques on the right of the socle. Marble group 23 x 43 x 22 cm, socle 9 x 37 x 20 cm.

Provenance

Austrian private collection.
