Inscribed in old hand-writing to the reverse on the stretcher: Frascati.
Julius Helfft was a pupil of Wilhelm Schirmer at the Berlin Academy. During his first trip to Italy from 1843 - 1847 he visited Florence, Rome, Naples, and Genoa. He painted this atmospheric view of the Loggia of an Italian villa one year after his return from Italy. According to the inscription on the stretcher, the work depicts a view of Frascati.
