Eduard Hübner was the son of Julius Hübner the Elder. He was a versatile artist who painted mythological and biblical narrative works, portraits, and the curtain of the Leipzig Opera house, as well as working as a sculptor as of 1880. This large-format work depicts a scene from the French Wars of Religion and represents an important early composition by the artist. "Hübner first exhibited at the Dresden Academy in 1867 with the painting "Die Hugenottin Marguerite Le Riche ihre Mitgefangenen tröstend und erbauend" (1865), painted in Düsseldorf." (Lex. d.
