Fritz von Uhde

The Little Chat (Garden Scene)

Oil on canvas (relined). 49.5 x 62 cm.
Signed lower right: F. v. Uhde.

Labelled to the back of the stretcher: "No. 1586/Moderne Galerie/Heinrich Thannhauser/München Theatinerstr. 7".

This brightly lit scene painted in 1906 belongs to a series of garden scenes painted by Uhde in the last decade of his career (Rosenhagen, op. cit.). The works depict his three daughters, here with a dog, in the garden of Uhde's country house in Percha on Lake Starnberg. Uhde captures the changes of light and shadow in short, flickering brushstrokes to recreate the atmosphere of casual conversation on a summer's day.

Illus. 1: Invoice from Galerie Heinrich Tannhauser from 1911.
