Carl Wuttke made a name for himself throughout the 1870s and 1880s with his southern European and Scandinavian landscapes. He later travelled throughout Asia, Africa, the United States, and the Near East. He expanded his repertoire accordingly and afterwards became one of the leading German proponents of Orientalism. It was during this time that he painted his views of Jerusalem, including this depiction of Damascus Gate, which Wuttke painted several times. He evokes the busy atmosphere of the old city of Jerusalem in a vividly coloured work.
