Henri Matisse

Fillette
1944

Lithograph on hand-made, slightly textured paper 31.5 x 21.4 cm (33.1 x 27 cm) Framed under glass. Signed lower left 'H. Matisse' and inscribed 'B.aT.'. Monogrammed in the plate lower right. Trial proof ("Bon à tirer") before the edition of 25 numbered proofs and 10 artist's proofs.

Matisse created this lithograph in 1944 in order to sell it for the benefit of 'Enfants évacués des Alpes-Maritimes'. André Lejard, director of Éditions du Chêne, encouraged the artist to publish the drawing studies, which were created in preparation for this graphic work, in the form of a lithographic series. It was published in 1946 under the title 'Visages' by Éditions du Chêne; the 14 lithographs were accompanied by poems by Pierre Reverdy (cf. Duthuit, Ouvrages illustré 11).
