Norbert Kricke

Raumplastik
1950s

Steel, nickel-plated. On stone plinth. Overall height approx. 35.5 cm.

While straight lines defined Norbert Kricke's early space sculptures, free-flowing arcs and curves that unite to form knots and clusters were characteristic of the works created in the mid-1950s. The kinetic energy, which the artist visualised in his space sculptures right from the beginning, now radiates vigorously into the entire surrounding space. The space sculptures thus forfeit their self-contained course, which had become too constrictive in the course of Kricke's artistic development.
“The sculpture now no longer describes its own course, which is followed by the gaze as if on rails, but it now urges the gaze forward, so to speak, sets it in motion and leads it to the point where it can lift off from the path to fly freely into space; the sensation one experiences when looking at the space sculpture at its third stage of development is that of being moved by the lines and of becoming free in the end point of the sculpture: the course is thus specified as an impulse form.” (Jürgen Morschel, Norbert Kricke, exhib.cat. Staatsgalerie Stuttgart/Westfälisches Landesmuseum Münster, Stuttgart 1976, p.41).
