An ivory okimono of a mountain priest and a peasant. Tokyo. Around 1900

The yamabushi carries a hako-oi on his back and a staff, at the hip a short and a long sword, the garment adorned with the rindô mon of the Minamoto family. The peasant next to him shoulders bundles of blossoming branches, his arm resting on an axe with a rabbit next to it. Signed Hômin with kaô.
Height 17.4 cm

The carver of this okimono possibly is Akatsuka Hômin, who lived in Honjô, Tokyo and was a member of the Society of Tokyo Sculptors (Tôkyô chôkôkai) in 1904.
