Epitaph for Vitus Nieger

Oil on copper. 83 x 64 cm.

The Latin inscription of this epitaph to Vitus Nieger, who was known as a patron of the churches and Marian veneration at Ebingen and Stetten am kalten Markt in the Swabian Alps, records the date of his death as 3rd July 1639. The central depiction shows the subject accompanied by an angel and Saint Dominic, who intercede for him with the Virgin Mary and the Holy Trinity. The small church on the left can be identified as a depiction of "Unserer Lieben Frau" in Ebingen, which was built in 1490. The saints Vitus and Sebastian are depicted to the sides of the panel. The epitaph is housed in a small acrylic case.
