A Parisian Empire tortoiseshell snuff box with a cameo portrait

Rectangular tortoiseshell box with 18k gold mountings and lining. The hinged lid decorated with blue enamel, glazed, and set with a gouache on ivory trompe l'oeil miniature of a sardonyx cameo with a lady in classical costume beside a pillar with a genius and a sitting dog at her feet. Hallmarks: Maker's mark "PAM" in a rhombus, other indistinct marks (Arminjon, 2823). A small dryness crack to one corner of the lid (L ca. 7 mm). Minor dents to the gilt interior. 2.2 x 7.3 x 4 cm. Weight 104 g.

The goldsmith Pierre André Montauban enjoyed a highly productive career in Paris between 1804 and 1802 at his studio in Quai des Orfèvres 30. He was described as a "bijoutier garnisseur", indicating that he also produced gold mountings for works by other artists.
