A faience box formed as a turtle

With naturalistically painted removable shell. Unmarked. The tail restored. L 24, H 8.5 cm.
Schrezheim or Durlach, 1760 - 70.

Sweetmeat and butter dishes formed as turtles were relatively popular throughout the 18th century and were produced by numerous manufactories. The motif is thought to be based on a Meissen design.
