This early work by Claes Moeyaert depicts the appointment of Cincinnatus as dictator, an event recorded in Livy's History of Rome (Livy, Ab Urbe Condita, III, 26). The patrician Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus lived a secluded life as a farmer until the senate appointed him dictator in 456 BC, hoping that he would rescue Rome from its enemies. After doing this, Cincinnatus returned to his plough and thus became a shining example of Roman virtue.
