Juan de Arellano specialised in flower still lifes early in his career. He was influenced by the early 17th century Flemish and Italian works of this genre in the collections of the Spanish aristocracy and the court collection of Madrid. Despite this, he was still able to develop his own unique style which appears in its mature state in the works of the 1660s, and Dr Fred Meijer attributes the present work to this period. Arellano opened an art dealership in Calle Atocha in Madrid in around 1646 where he sold both his own works and those of other artists.
