Riflemen in the Mountains
Gouache on paper mounted on card. 25.6 x 31.5 cm.
Framed under glass.
Signed and dated lower right: Th. Rocholl (...) Erseck 1914.
Theodor Rocholl was taught to paint in Dresden under Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld and Ludwig Richter, in Munich under Carl Theodor von Piloty, and in Düsseldorf under Wilhelm Sohn. He became a highly successful military painter, and this small-format work provides an insight into this specialisation. The work was presumably painted in Albania in 1914 and can be brought into connection with another painting entitled "Schützenkette vor Salesi".
