Grützner's penchant for painting clerics stemmed from his childhood. His family's close contact to the village priest Fischer from Großkarlowitz, to whom he continued to express thanks throughout his life, as well as his lasting closeness to the church inspired him to extend his repertoire of clerical motifs.
Alongside Carl Spitzweg and Franz von Defregger, Eduard von Grützner was among the most important of the Munich genre painters of the late 19th century.
