Franconia late 15th century

A late 15th century Franconian carved wood figure of the Virgin and Child

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and partially hollowed out. With partially overpainted older polychromy. The Virgin stands on the crescent moon in a gently swaying pose, holding the nude and writhing Christ Child in both hands over Her hip. She wears a cloak over Her shoulders and Her girded gown, which falls in an undulating cascade of thick vertical and compressed folds to the moon at Her feet.
Both arms and the left foot of the Child lacking. Wear with minor losses. Mounted on a wooden plinth. Height 96 cm (without plinth).

Provenance

North German private collection.
