Probably Landshut circa 1520

A clay figure of Saint Joseph from a Nativity scene, probably Landshut, circa 1520

Fired clay, worked three-quarters in the round, the reverse deeply hollowed out. Minimal remains of former polychromy. A figure of a kneeling bearded man with his hands folded in prayer, facing to the right and leaning slightly forward. The piece is presumably a figure of Saint Joseph from a Nativity scene. The size of the figure, designed for a slightly lowered viewpoint, and the pronounced curve of the spine indicate that it was designed to be placed in the tympanon of a church portal. The composition of this work displays generously folded drapery, and detailed expressive physiognomy and finely carved hair. This South German work probably originates from Landshut, where there were workshops producing large-format clay sculptures for use in architecture in the late Gothic period.
A crack to the neck. Wear with losses, especially to the right shoulder, the lower left edge, and the back right hem of the robe. Some places overworked in clay and plaster. Mounted on a wooden plinth. 98 x 72 x 35 cm.
